Broward County Awarded $27 Million to Stabilize Neighborhoods Hard-hit by Foreclosure

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Ron Sims, left, and Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl.

DATE: September 8, 2010

Broward County Board of County Commissioners
PHONE: 954-357-8083

Broward County received more than $27 million today to assist communities struggling to reverse the effects of the foreclosure crisis. U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Deputy Secretary Ron Sims announced the award at a news conference this afternoon in Dania Beach. He said that Broward County would individually receive $5,457,535 and 13 Broward County cities would receive funding. Here is the breakdown by county and city:

• Broward County $5,457,553
• Coral Springs $1,657,845
• Davie $1,171,166
• Deerfield Beach $1,183,897
• Fort Lauderdale $2,145,921
• Hollywood $2,433,001
• Lauderhill $1,500,609
• Margate $1,148,877
• Miramar $2,321,827
• Pembroke Pines $2,330,542
• Plantation $1,216,427
• Pompano Beach $1,500,572
• Sunrise $1,775,162
• Tamarac $1,427,857

The grants represent a third round of funding through HUD's Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) and will provide targeted emergency assistance to state and local governments to acquire, redevelop or demolish foreclosed properties.

"The key is to be smart with what we do with the rest of this money," said HUD Secretary Sims. "We want to protect America's communities and neighborhoods from the blight and abandonment that can occur with foreclosed properties."

"The money awarded to us today will continue this successful program that restores neighborhoods, provides affordable housing and creates jobs in the construction industry," said Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl. "Broward County has successfully purchased and rehabilitated 140 foreclosed properties with NSP funds. This third round of funding from HUD ensures continued success in the future."

A total of $1 billion dollars will be distributed nationwide. The state of Florida will receive an estimated $208 million, the largest award given to any single state in the country.

Dear friends and partners,

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk will be in South Florida all day September 23, 2010. According to USTR:

“The goal of the Ambassador’s trip is to highlight the impact of passages of the Korea FTA (KORUS). We are looking for business to tour/hold events at that are engaged in trade and exporting. We’ve been doing a lot of port tours lately so I would like to stay away from that this trip. I recognize that KORUS is one of 3 FTA’s that are pending and we welcome questions on other topics other than Korea.”

We are working with USTR, the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise Florida on Ambassador Kirk’s schedule. The morning through lunch is tied up with GMCC and EFI organized events. It has been suggested that a visit to Ft. Lauderdale would be welcome and we are exploring a roundtable with partners at the Ft. Lauderdale USEAC. There is also interest in finding a company that is doing business with Korea for a possible plant tour since the visit so far is heavy on the US-Colombia and Panama FTA impact and weak on showing benefit of the US-Korea FTA.

Please provide suggestions on businesses exporting to Korea that may be included in the program. Thank you!

Best,

Eduardo Torres

Broward County Transit Receives $8 Million Grant

Broward County Transit (BCT) received more than $8 million from the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Bus and Bus Livability Initiative Grant Program aimed at upgrading bus services and facilities. The competitive grant program is part of a nearly $300 million investment of the Obama administration’s livability initiative to better coordinate transportation, housing and commercial development for residents and their communities.

FTA’s Bus and Livability Initiative Grant Program is investing more than $163 million in 47 projects around the nation. BCT will apply the grant toward enhancements along the Broward Boulevard corridor between the Broward Central Terminal at Northwest First Avenue in Fort Lauderdale and the West Regional Terminal at Northwest 84 Avenue in Plantation. The grant program goals are to improve transit travel time along the corridor, reduce reliance on automobiles and reduce emissions and improve air quality by increasing public transportation use. For more information about the Bus and Bus Livability Grant Program, call Broward County Transit at 954-357-6786.
